Technology, such as social media, helps connect job seekers of all levels, especially those with the busiest schedules.

However, social media is not a ‘set it forget it’ resource - if you are setting up profiles without devoting sufficient time  each week to make new connections and interact with potential employers or referrals you may have little success with this new job finding technology.

Social media job sites have completely revolutionised a ‘job search’ leaving job seekers who are not technologically minded at a great disadvantage, thus the impact of social media has completely changed the way in which people now find employment. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are powerful symbols of a new generation of online tools and health professionals have begun using social media to benefit patients and enhance professional networks.

In 2013, approximately 50% of healthcare professionals used social media as an integral part of their job search, of the professionals surveyed almost 75% cited Facebook as the most popular social networking tool for identifying employment opportunities. LinkedIn was ranked as the second most popular platform.

Referrals remained the most popular way for healthcare professionals to look for work using social media, with 70% of respondents indicating they found new positions in this manner. Direct contact with potential employers represented 64% of professionals’ job searching efforts, with an additional 57%  using online job boards.

YouTube is presently the second largest search engine so take advantage to interact and receive advice from people who may have a similar work-background, shared interest in job opportunities or desired career paths etc.  Also for example you can get a first-hand insight into what a certain company may expect from their employees.  The ability to connect with people online should provide a realistic assessment of what areas of employment and companies are expanding.
